What kind of product is often outsourced (commissioned) for waterproof design? : Trends in waterproof design from the perspective of a development and design company

Electronic devices to be waterproofed can be classified as follows,

(1) Underwater (freshwater, seawater, other liquids)
(2) Equipment that can be immersed in water
(3) Where it can be exposed to droplets (water in the vicinity of the place of use, human sweat adhering or entering, in the ground, etc.)
(4) High humidity and foggy areas

In addition to the above, (5) there is also “waterproof design” in the sense that an enclosure is designed to contain a liquid inside and prevent it from leaking out.

Listed below are some of the specifics:

(1) Underwater (freshwater, seawater, other liquids)

  • Vehicles and moving objects (e.g., underwater drones) used in the water (under the sea) and on the water (on the sea)
  • Measurement equipment, cameras, wireless equipment (optical communication, etc.) used in the water (under the sea) and on the water (on the sea)

(2) Equipment that can be immersed in water

  • Smartphones and mobile phones

(3) Where it can be exposed to droplets

  • Sensors and measurement equipment embedded in the soil
  • Batteries for outdoor use
  • blowing fan
  • Outdoor-installed IoT sensors
  • Equipment used in the bathroom
  • Wearable devices
  • Computers for outdoor use

(4) High humidity and foggy areas

Same as (3)

(5) Liquid containment in a case

  • Water cooling of high heat generating electronic equipment

In recent years, we have received an increasing number of inquiries about the waterproof function, especially for mobile devices and IoT devices, besides design requests for outdoor products with IoT sensors, mobile products, small measurement equipment and other portable products, including waterproof designs.

In addition, we have received an increasing number of requests for IPX9K waterproof designs for high temperature and high pressure, especially for products related to motor vehicles.

Our clients’ reasons of requesting waterproof design and evaluation to us are almost same like:

  • Their design doesn’t work well and they want to improve it.
  • They have finished a waterproof design, and would like to conduct a pre-compliance test before taking the product to a certified body for final test.
  • They want to know the limits of waterproof performance.
  • They would like to conduct a third-party verification of the waterproofness of OEM products, etc.

In order to meet your expectations, we continue to focus on waterproof design and evaluation work today.

WTI also provides services for accelerating your product development by quickly resolving design and test problems related to waterproof.
