Knacks for waterproof design: Cues for escape from the “Trial and Error” approach

As the demand for IoT devices such as wearable devices and outdoor sensors increases, the waterproof design of electronic devices is required more and more.

A waterproof design is much more difficult than one thinks and hard to deal with. It’s not uncommon to have a hard time identifying water leakage points, which is the most important part of a waterproof trouble-shooting. In addition, it’s not uncommon that cost-effective measures can not be found.

Here’s one example of the knack.

The correct use of O-rings is very important in waterproof design.
The important thing in usage is to make sure that the O-ring is “appropriately deformed”.

To do so, you need to pay attention to the followings,

  • Apply the correct pressure to ensure the O-ring is properly deformed. To this end, choose the correct screw shape, size and thread spacing.
  • Make sure to have clearance for the O-ring deformation.
